Scouts from the 3rd Kensington Sea Scout Troop competed in the Gauteng Sea Scout Seamanship Competition held in Benoni July 22.

The competition was designed to test the Scouts’ abilities to execute the different seamanship disciplines which form the heart of the Sea Scout programme.

These disciplines include man overboard drill, anchoring, embarking and disembarking, manoeuvring the gig around a slalom course and navigation.

Each discipline was evaluated separately and the troops also put their skills to practising in various races.

“The many hours of training and practising together was rewarded at the competition,” said Lorrainne Le Sueur, Troop Scouter

“Both the 3rd Kensington Sea Scout junior and senior crews performed consistently well throughout the races and excelled at the land and water skill evaluations to ultimately win all the awards and take home the Best Overall Seamanship Trophy.”

The 3rd Kensington Senior Scout crew won the senior long-distance race, Best Senior Crew Award and Best Senior Seamanship Trophy.

The 3rd Kensington Junior Scout crew won the junior long-distance race, Best Junior Crew Award and Best Junior Seamanship Trophy.

“The crew stood out by being well disciplined, having great spirit and looking smart, as always. It was a very proud day for the 3rd Kensington family,” said Le Sueur.
