Bedfordview Scouts champion through harsh terrain

The Scouts utilised skills previously learned at troop meetings to make their stay as comfortable as possible.

Members of the 1st Bedfordview Scout Troop recently joined Scouts from around the East Rand for a week-long survival camp on the banks of the crocodile-infested Pongola River in KwaZulu-Natal.

During the camp the Scouts hiked 15km through grueling terrain to their campsite.

They also cooked all their meals on an open fire with a survival knife as their only tool and slept in shelters, which they had built themselves.

Jarod, Michael and Logan enjoy a mini-pizza treat on the camp.

The Scouts also had to keep watch for four-legged visitors from the adjacent Ithala Game Reserve.

The Scouts utilised skills previously learned at troop meetings to make their stay as comfortable as possible.

They had to light a fire without matches, navigate for kilometres at night using only the stars.

They also had to know the difference between a deadly puff adder and a harmless egg eater.

The Scouts also made dirty water fit for human consumption and knew how to treat hypothermia or a broken leg.

The 1st Bedfordview Scout Troop has been serving the community of Bedfordview for the past 90 years.

They have an excellent record in providing the youth of Bedfordview and Edenvale with real adventure.
