Community members interested in a career as a police officer have been encouraged to apply for the SAPS’ Basic Police Development Learning Programme (BPDLP).
Those interested in applying must ensure they are young, energetic, physically and mentally fit individuals dedicated to serving their country.

Application forms for the BPDLP can be collected from the nearest police station and must be filled out by the applicant.
The application forms must be hand-delivered no later than June 15 to your nearest police station.
Those applying for the programme must:
• be South African citizens.
• be between the ages of 18 and 30.
• have completed matric.
• be in possession of a valid light motor vehicle driver’s licence.
• submit themselves to a physical medical examination.
• undergo a psychological assessment.
• be proficient in at least two of the official languages, of which one must be English.
• be prepared to take the oath of office.
• not have any tattoo marks of which will be visible when wearing the SAPS summer uniform.
• have no previous criminal convictions and/or a pending criminal, civil, disciplinary case.
• allow their fingerprints to be taken for background enquiries to be made.
• be fit to possess a firearm.
• be prepared to serve anywhere in South Africa.
• have a body mass index (BMI) of less than 30.
• have a waist circumference of 102cm (men) or 88cm (women).
If successful, candidates will participate in a three-phase 21-month long programme.

Candidates will spend one month at a police station, eight months at a SAPS academy and 12 months on probation.
