Update: Sentencing postponed as Bedford Centre heist accused get new legal rep

State prosecutor accuses Zuma and Nhlapo of using delay tactics.

The sentencing of the men found guilty of the 2015 Bedford Centre cash-in-transit heist was again postponed last week.

Sentencing was postponed in the Germiston Regional Court to June 13.

This comes after Celempilo Zuma and Themba Nhlapo terminated the services of their previous attorney.

Zuma and Nhlapo have a new advocate who said his clients feel they did not have a fair trial.

He asked for postponement and requested an application for transcripts of the case to review it.

The state prosecutor reminded the court that this would be the fourth time that sentencing was postponed.

She said the accused did not mention previously that they were having difficulties with their previous advocate.

She accused Zuma and Nhlapo of using delay tactics.

The new advocate of the accused said that this is not an appeal, but that his clients have the right to a new attorney.

He said that what his clients seek is for the court to be impartial and informed the court that he needed two weeks to review the transcripts.

The magistrate granted the defence’s request to obtain scripts and set a new sentencing date for June 13 while Zuma and Nhlapo remain in custody.

In 2015, Zuma and Nhlapo were arrested in connection with the Bedford Centre heist.

They have been found guilty on two counts of attempted murder, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition and armed robbery.

Previously reported:

The two men were found guilty for their involvement in the 2015 Bedford Centre cash-in-transit heist. Sentencing was initially scheduled for February this year and last week’s postponement was the second in the case.

The men were each found guilty of Attempted Murder, Armed Robbery, and Possession of an Unlicensed Firearm and Ammunition.
