Every bit helps

Bez Valley - “I’ve done a lot of odd jobs to put food on the table for my step-siblings.”

Bez Valley resident Tshepo Khetsi is collecting sanitary pads, school shoes and canned food for people who come from disadvantaged families.

Khetsi is an orphan and said he had a difficult childhood.

“I was born in Bez Valley in 1985. My parents died when I was still young and all my dreams faded away. Like any other teenager, I wanted to further my studies after matric but I could not as I did not have any financial support.

“I was raised by different people in different households here in Bez Valley. I was thankful that they were able to provide shelter and food for me and my step-siblings. I found it very difficult to discuss what I would like to become with someone who I was not related to. My dream was to attend university,” he said.

“As the eldest child, I also had the responsibility to look after my step-siblings. After matric, I had to let go of my dream of studying further. I did numerous odd jobs to put food on the table for my step-siblings. I started to work as a car guard at the Eastgate Shopping Centre.

“I know how it feels to have no one to turn to when you need something. I also know how difficult life is without a parent.

“I don’t have much, but the little things I’m doing to collect goods will hopefully touch someone’s life,” he said.

Khetsi distributes all the goods he collects to different homes in Joburg East.

Anyone willing to donate can contact Khetsi on 063 072 2063.
