Help Malvern’s Dlamini get to America

Malvern resident Thandiwe Brenda Dlamini has been selected to go to the United States of America for her art performance.

Dlamini is pleading to local businesses and residents to help fund the trip and accommodation.

Last year she had an opportunity to perform at the Anua Talent Search Competition in Pretoria.

“I took first place for the best female actress above the age of 18. I also received the golden ticket to represent SA at the International Presentation of Performers (IPOP) in Las Vegas, California.

“I will be performing in three categories which are acting, dancing and singing. The event will take place during June and July.

“I need sponsorship for my return air tickets, a USA visa, registration fees to participate, two weeks preparation camp in SA, two weeks hotel accommodation in Las Vegas and group transport in SA and abroad to be able to participate at this event. All this comes close to R93 000,” she said.

Dlamini said it is her biggest dream to attend the event.

“I am currently unemployed. I feel that it will be impossible to attend if I don’t find a sponsor. I have always been passionate about the arts. I have been involved in poetry activities since 2001 and I have attended a number of poetry recitals.

“In Grade Six, I was part of the cast in my school’s drama which was part of a tuberculosis awareness campaign,” she said.

Dlamini was inspired to study dramatic arts after watching Umoja.

“My dream was to be part of the cast but I did not get a chance to audition. My father encouraged me to pursue a career in arts.

“He used to dance Stathamiya where he grew up in Eshowe, KwaZulu-Natal. He was also involved in arts activities. My father also teaches young boys to dance Stathamiya.”

Dlamini studied Dramatic Arts at the University of the Witwatersrand.

“I obtained my degree in 2009. During my student years, I performed in Rush, Yerma and Umuntu Wesonto students’ productions.

“Leleti Khumalo, Thembi Nyandeni, and the late Joe Mafela motivated me to study drama,” she said.
