Jeppe SAPS is looking for Nkosiyazi Phungula, who escaped from prison.

Earlier this week the EXPRESS reported that one of the escaped prisoners was allegedly involved in the Zebra Inn murders in Jeppestown in June last year.

The spokesperson for the station, Captain Richard Munyai, said the prisoner, Nkosiyazi Phungula, was arrested for the murder of businessman Werner Josef Peherchtold (76) and his friend Johann Botha.

Peherchtold and Botha, who was a producer and presenter of the TV programme 50/50, were shot and killed at Zebra Inn.

“Seven of the escapees have since been found. Two of the escapees, Ntobeko Hlatshwayo and Sabelo Ngubane, were fatally shot during a shoot-out with police in KwaZulu-Natal.

“Five others were re-arrested, two in KZN, two in Gauteng and the other in the Eastern Cape,” said the spokesperson for Gauteng Provincial SAPS, Colonel Lungelo Dlamini.

Dlamini said the escapees are considered dangerous and members of the public who know their whereabouts are warned not to confront them, but to contact the nearest police station or Crime Stop on 08600 10111 at all hours.

“Any information that may lead to the arrest of the prisoners may be rewarded,” he said.

The spokesperson for correctional services, Singabakho Nxumalo, said the officials have been granted bail of R5 000 each and are due to appear in court again on May 3.
