Suspect nabbed for theft of motor vehicle and perjury

JOBURG – While officers were opening a case, they received a call that the car was seen at a garage in Bertrams.

Jeppe SAPS arrested a 38-year-old man for theft of motor vehicle and perjury in Bertrams in March.

Spokesperson for the station Captain Richard Munyai said the suspect alleged that he left the key inside his Chevrolet Spark in the street and the car was stolen while he was sleeping.

“The woman who came with him to report the incident relates a different story. She told police officers that she is the owner of the car, which the suspect drives as a meter taxi and she employed him.

“She also said that the suspect had gone for three weeks without seeing her and has never given her the money he was supposed to cash in. He eventually told her that the car had been stolen.

“While officers were opening a case, they received a call that the car was seen at a garage in Bertrams,” he said.

Munyai said the officers took them to the given address.

“Upon arrival, the employees at the garage told officers that they confiscated the car from the suspect after he arrived and requested R50 petrol but did not pay. They took the keys from him and told him he will get the car when he brings the money,” he said.

The suspect was arrested and detained at Jeppe SAPS. He is expected to appear in court while police investigations continue.
