Strathyre celebrates 50 years in Kensington

The house continued to function until 1968 when it was moved to its current facility on 11th Avenue in Kensington.

Strathyre Girls’ Home will be celebrating 50 years in Kensington.

The home was established in 1921 as a home for displaced mothers with children in Germiston.

In 1934 the name Strathyre, meaning ‘little haven’, was adopted when the children’s home was transferred to a house in Troyville.

The house continued to function until 1968 when it was moved to its current facility on 11th Avenue in Kensington.

“We are proud as a home to have come this far.

“This is the reason we going to have several events in celebrating this milestone,” said the home’s administrator, Major Naomi Malinga.

The first event will be a cocktail and dinner party, which will take place at the home on April 24.

“The cocktail and dinner will be a fund-raising event and we would like to ask a donation of no less than R200,” said Malinga.

The children at the home are committed to the Salvation Army’s care through the Children’s Court due to varying degrees of abuse, neglect, poverty, abandonment or incapacity of their caregivers.

The home can accommodate 60 children and currently houses 46 girls ranging from three to 18 years old.

“We would like to invite businesses and the community to come and support us in our festive time and help us in raising funds for the home.

“The community is always amazing and we appreciate and we thank them for always being there for the home,” said Malinga.
