“It was amazing to witness such a monumental achievement made by a former learner,” said Siya.

“We are really proud to say that Akani came from Edenglen High.”

Siya said Simbine is still invested in Edenglen High.

“He always has time for the school and is never too busy to visit us.”

In September last year he visited the school for the unveiling of a grandstand named after him.

Gerhard Dempsey, EGHS head of sports, then already expressed pride in the former learner’s success on the track.

While a learner at Edenglen, Simbine received his full colours in athletics for 2009, 2010 and 2011.
