Community welcomes Bez Valley upgrade project

The project will be a maintenance and repair project which will be divided into two phases.

Ward 118 had a public meeting on April 4 at Morning Hill Club in Bruma to introduce the Bez Valley Park sports ground upgrade project.

A presentation on the scope of work was presented by Admire Madiri from Peu Ya Africa consulting engineers.

The project will be a maintenance and repair project which will be divided into two phases.

The first phase will focus on the soccer fields and the second phase will focus on the renovation of the clubhouse.

The first phase is expected to start in May and be completed in June.

Project manager Gift Sithole from the community development department said sports and recreation will work with City of Joburg’s City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ) on the project to guide on issues related to JCPZ.

Sithole said this after a concern was raised by a resident on how the construction of the soccer field will affect the trees and surroundings.

Sithole said the project will benefit the community and small businesses in terms of job creation.

“Sub-contractors are encouraged to submit their company profile for the project but we urge them to have all the required documentation which is a company profile, supported by a proof of address,” said Sithole.

A community liaison officer position is open and Ward 118 residents are encouraged to apply by submitting their CVs.

“We urge residents to submit CVs with all the requested documents. Also, do a research on what are the duties of a CLO because sometimes people just submit CVs without knowing what they are applying for.

“It’s important to come prepared in order to be considered for the position,” said Sithole.

A request was made for documentation verification for those who would be applying for the CLO position.

“We will be working closely with the necessary people to ensure that all documents are correct and the selection process will not be conducted by the councillor but by a selected team,” said Ward 118 Clr Neuren Pietersen.

A concern was raised by a resident about the timing of the project on how it will affect soccer clubs that use the football fields because it’s peak season for soccer.

“An alternative will be arranged for teams that use the soccer fields if there is a need. Communication will have to be done in time to know if any arrangements need to be made for the teams,” said Sithole.

Residents were also concerned about the safety in the park because of fencing that has been removed and questioned how the property will be secured during renovations.

Madiri said the first phase budget will focus on the soccer fields.

“The fencing is for the soccer field and not the perimeter fencing. We will look at how we can repair the perimeter fence but we will not put up new fencing,” said Madiri.

To ensure the place is secured, the project will also include putting up a guard house at the entrance.

Those interested in the CLO position can submit their CVs at the Malvern Clinic until April 13.
