The importance of a strong foundation

“If all learning areas are covered in grade R, the transition, into grade one will be pleasant and encouraging,"

In the hopes of re-establishing Edenvale’s Early Childhood Development (ECD) Forum, Jacaranda Academy recently hosted an ECD forum at the school’s premises.

Angela Andrews, director of Jacaranda Academy, said the forum was attended by a number of “key role players” and went well.

The re-launched forum will allow educators to come together and discuss matters of common interest.

The forum was hosted in Edenglen on March 15.

Andrews said the main objectives of the forum include;

• Being a platform to share and promote ECD in and around the Edenvale area.

• Serving as a discussion panel on major developments in ECD.

• Supporting the implementation of the South African Integrated Programme (2030) at national, provincial and local levels.

• Offering training and workshops to those involved in ECD.

• Rallying support and co-operation from all relevant education authorities.

• Providing feedback about new developments in ECD to parents.

At the re-launch of the forum Sophie Breytenbach, a member of the original forum, spoke to community members.

In her presentation, she highlighted the need for cohesion among all ECD providers in the area.

Breytenbach said schools need to co-operate to ensure that all the relevant policies and criteria are met.

Maligay Naidoo, head of department for ECD at Jacaranda Academy, said ECD is vital for a child’s education.

“If all learning areas are covered in Grade R, the transition into Grade One will be pleasant and encouraging,” said Naidoo.
