Edenvale and Greenstone communities rendezvous to combat crime

"To fight crime effectively, the community needs to stand together."

Edenvale SAPS, Greenstone Shopping Centre and Night Guard Security came together to host a crime prevention and awareness day.

A dog comes to the rescue of its handler and during one of the demonstrations held for the community.

The event, which was held on March 10, gave community members the opportunity to learn more about crime fighting.

It was held at Greenstone Shopping Centre’s Entrance Four.

Zaine Eblen of Night Guard and an organiser of the event, said the day was about the community coming together.

“To fight crime effectively, the community needs to stand together,” said Eblen.

“By having these events the community can be made aware of crimes in their area.”

In addition to creating awareness, the day was held to allow the community to interact with the SAPS and Edenvale’s Community Policing Forum.

“Some people feel that SAPS or security companies don’t care about them, so we want to change that way of thinking,” said Eblen

Sergeant Jacob Mashile, the head of Edenvale SAPS’ Social Crime Prevention Unit, said the event was well supported by the community.

“It was all about making the public aware of crime,” said Mashile.

Police shared information on how to prevent crimes such as pickpocketing and bank followings with the community.

At the event community members were also given the chance to see security dogs in action.

Community member Christine Niemand said she thoroughly enjoyed the day.

“Seeing the dogs in action was something different and exciting to see,” said Niemand.

Charmain Qofela, the marketing and brand manager of the shopping centre, said the day was thoroughly enjoyed by all.
