Sacred Heart learners enjoy leadership camp

The purpose of the camp was to encourage teamwork and problem-solving skills.

Sacred Heart College Grade Six learners attended a leadership camp at Camp Nelu at the end of February.

The purpose of the camp was to encourage teamwork and problem-solving skills.

The learners were divided into four groups and they had a camp counselor.

Each group had to create a name for their group, a song and design their own crest.

The groups had to complete four activities which run simultaneously and on a rotation basis.

The activities included the learners being strapped into a harness to go on the big swing, which was hoisted metres above the ground and controlled with climbing rope.

Another group was kitted out with the appropriate gear and taken off into the forest to engage in paintball.

At the same time, another group tackled small-scale problems and also developed strategies to cross a tight-rope type wire.

The group also had to tackle Mission Impossible, a puzzle-like obstacle course which involved intensive problem-solving and teamwork.

The teams participated in the Great Egg Drop where teams had to design a mechanism to protect an egg that was then dropped from a 6m height.

One team succeeded.

The night orientation also proved to be challenging for some groups.

“The overall experience of Camp Nelu was very positive. Learners enjoyed themselves while doing something fun and educational,” said Lynn Walker, Sacred Heart marketing coordinator.
