Report overflowing sewage as soon as possible

"One manhole cover was broken by a heavy vehicle and fell inside the manhole"

Earlier this year residents from Leisure View Retirement Village raised concerns about open sewerage manholes and sewage flowing down First Avenue.

The portion of the sewerage system identified lies between Aitken Road and the retirement village.

Residents were concerned about the health risk that the sewage posed to the retirement home and the community.

“Someone walking along First Avenue could fall down into the manhole and injure themselves,” said Bruce Archer, a trustee member of the village.

In response to concerns about sewage flowing down First Avenue, the City of Ekurhuleni’s (CoE) spokesperson, Themba Gadebe, said because the manholes are on the edge of the road, they are damaged by vehicles.

“One manhole cover was broken by a heavy vehicle and fell inside the manhole. The second cover was stolen,” said Gadebe.

Gadebe said sewage flooded the road when the sewerage system was blocked by debris.

“Debris fell into the system through the manhole openings. The debris and pieces of the broken cover were removed and the two covers were replaced,” said Gadebe.

There is no plan to upgrade the sewerage line.

Gadebe said the system is in working condition and does not need replacing.

He urged residents to report any sewage leaks to the CoE.

“Overflowing sewers pollute the watercourses and rivers. Sewage contains harmful bacteria and chemicals,” said Gadebe.
