She said she loves swimming because it allows her to compete with herself to be the best.

“I want to be the best I can be at swimming and I continually strive to better my own times. I prefer the longer distances to the short sprints, as sprints are over so quickly.

“Swimming long distances require more perseverance and training. You have to rely on your training to get to the end,” said Caitlin.

The NEWS asked Caitlin what makes a good captain.

“You must be a good leader and always be willing to listen to your team. It is also important to have compassion.”

She participated in the Aquelle Midmar Mile open water swim in KwaZulu-Natal on February 10 and 11, where she swam eight miles for her chosen of charity, Cansa.

“I wanted to raise money for a good cause and the eight-mile swim was the perfect way for me to raise the funds,” said Caitlin.

Although Caitlin is passionate about swimming, she said she is not planning to become a professional swimmer.

“I don’t have any aspirations to become a professional swimmer but will keep on swimming as long as I enjoy it,” said Caitlin.

She is not only a swimmer but also plays tennis and hockey and runs.

“I’m an active person and love sports. I use to do netball and cross-country at primary school but gave them up when I came to high school,” said Caitlin.

She said she hopes her swimming would inspire other younger girls to pursue what they love.
