Grade One learners continue with school’s tradition

“It marks the start and the end of each learner’s school journey as they ring the bell again at the end of their school journey in Grade 12.”

It was a special day for Sacred Heart College’s Grade One learners on January 26 as they marked the beginning of their school journey.

A Sacred Heart tradition, The Ring the Bell ceremony, was held where parents were invited to witness the special moment when each young learner rings the bell outside the school’s chapel.

The bell and the college chapel have a rich history and are of particular significance to the college which is one of five Marist schools in the country.

The bell came from the Third General House of the Marist Brothers in Grugliasco, Italy where it had hung since the late eighteen hundreds.

In 1958 Brother Jordan, who was the Principal of Sacred Heart College in the late 50s, requested the bell be given to the college for its chapel.

“The Ring the Bell ceremony is special to learners, parents and the school because it marks an important time in a learner’s life.

“It marks the start and the end of each learner’s school journey as they ring the bell again at the end of their school journey in Grade 12.

“We wish our Grade One learners a wonderful journey with the school as well as the parents.

“We are happy that they are part of the family and encourage them to be fully involved, and we support the children,” said Lynn Walker, Sacred Heart’s marketing coordinator.

The bell was used to call the brothers to prayer and meals for over 50 years and now it marks a journey of learning.

Learners where called one by one by the primary school principal, Mark Potterton, to step forward, ring the bell, and receive a certificate.
