Edenvale school hopes to give a hand

"We want our learners to know the importance of saving water, this initiative is a great way to do that."

To help those in need, Over the Moon Childcare Centre has started collecting water for Cape Town residents.

Wanda Groenewald, the manager of Over the Moon Childcare Centre, sits with owner and principal Claudia du Plooy with the school’s collection of water.

The Edenvale school, in partnership with an Alberton trucking company, began its initiative on January 26.

Since then the school has collected 10 litres of water.

The school is hoping to collect between 300 and 900 litres of water by February 9.

As a result of the severe drought in the Western Cape, it is estimated that Cape Town will run out of water before the end of April.

With the hopes of collecting more water, the school opened the initiative to the Edenvale community.

“After the recent drought in Gauteng we realised how hard having no water can be,” said Wanda Groenewald, the manager of the school.

“We want to help where we can.”

Wanda, an organiser of the initiative, decided to get involved when she saw posts on social media calling for water donations.

“By having this initiative we hope to make the lives of parents and children in Cape Town easier,” said Claudia du Plooy, owner and principal of the centre.

Once the water has been collected it will be loaded onto trucks and taken to Cape Town.

“Even if we only help some people for a few days we will be happy,” said Wanda.

Claudia said if the response from the community is positive the school will continue to be a water drop off point.

“We are only one school but we could collect so much more with Edenvale’s help,” said Wanda.

While the school is collecting water for Cape Town it will teach its learners about being water wise.

“We want our learners to know the importance of saving water,” said Claudia.

“This initiative is a great way to do that.”

Residents who want to assist the school can drop off donations of water at the school.

Donations are to be made at 75 Terrace Road between 8am and 4pm.
