It is alleged the visitors were followed from Melrose Arch, although the police cannot confirm this.

“Two suspects jumped out of nowhere and threatened the victims with a pistol. The driver was attacked with the pistol and sustained injuries to his face, while the passenger was assaulted on his shoulder,” explained Bedfordview SAPS spokesman Capt Andrè de Jager.

The incident took place at around 9.30pm and a case of armed robbery is being investigated.

“We urge guest house owners to advise their international guests to refrain from wearing expensive jewellery when they go out to avoid becoming victims of robbery.”

De Jager also advised community members in general to cut down on wearing expensive jewellery when they go out shopping.

“Also be vigilant, make sure you’re not followed. If you notice you are being followed, drive to the nearest police station. And be aware of your surroundings – if you see a suspicious vehicle, drive past your house,” de Jager said.

“Guards in enclosed areas should also be vigilant and ensure that they question suspicious looking vehicle owners thoroughly.”
