Edenvale City Improvement District excited about projects planned for 2018

To prevent further vandalism at the post office a fence will be erected, by ECID, around the building.

This year community members can look forward to seeing further improvements in Edenvale’s CBD.

Katy Young, the public relations officer for Edenvale City Improvement District (ECID), said the team is excited to make Edenvale better.

Edenvale City Improvement District’s Katy Young met with the NEWS to discuss ECID’s plans for 2018.

She believes the projects ECID has lined up for 2018 will benefit the community.

At the top of ECID’s list is finding a solution for the vagrants in Edenvale and reducing vandalism of the Edenvale Post Office.

“Over the years there has been a steady increase in the number of homeless people living in Edenvale,” said Young.

In October ECID identified 70 vagrants in Edenvale. Since then the number has grown to 100.

Young said many of the vagrants find shelter in the ECID footprint.

One of the locations used for shelter is the Edenvale Post Office.

“The vagrants living there have tampered with the electricity and water,” said Young.

“We are working with the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality to find a permanent solution.”

To prevent further vandalism at the post office a fence will be erected, by ECID, around the building.

Once the fence has been erected it will be locked at night and re-opened in the morning.

Young hopes the fence will limit access to the building.

In addition, the two gardens in front of the post office will be re-landscaped.

“We want to make the area more appealing to the community,” said Young.

Both projects should be completed by the end of February.

ECID also plans to promote and create awareness of the municipal bylaws in its footprint.

“At the moment we have a lot of illegal dumping taking place in ECID’s area.

“It often consists of general rubbish and building rubble,” said Young.

She said illegal dumping deters investors from investing in the town.

“We want to make Edenvale a hub of activity again so the town needs to be clean,” said Young.

To get the community involved in how ECID is improved residents are urged to email project ideas.

Once a concept has been submitted its viability will be assessed by ECID.

Other projects ECID plans to host this year include a fun run, a small business workshop and the festival of lights.
