Water is safe to drink – Dlamini

"If there is an increase in frequency and duration of geosmin occurrences, precautionary measures will be taken to remedy the problem."

Unusually coloured and smelling water from taps in Edenvale have had residents up in arms.

In recent weeks community members took to social media to voice their concerns.

Many claim the water smells moldy or similar to dam water.

Its colouration has varied from clear, cloudy to yellow.

Because of the unusual water quality, many residents are concerned for their health and well-being.

Despite the unusual water, Zweli Dlamini, the acting spokesperson for the City of Ekurhuleni, said the water is safe to consume.

He said the odour and colouration is caused by geosmin, a naturally occurring compound.

Geosmin is produced by algae found in surface water.

To ensure that the quality of water does not deteriorate further, an extensive water quality-monitoring programme has been put in place by Rand Water.

“If there is an increase in the amount of geosmin, precautionary measures will be taken to remedy the problem,” said Dlamini.

To reduce the flavour or presence of geosmin residents should:

• Use carbon filters which can make the water more palatable.

• Use a reverse-osmosis water-treatment system to remove the geosmin.

• Cool the tap water in a fridge to temporarily remove the flavour of geosmin.
