The EMPD recorded a total of 44 deaths on the roads of Ekurhuleni from December 1 to January 2.
One of those deaths occurred in a two-vehicle crash on the R24.
The driver of one of the vehicles involved was killed.

Furthermore, a total of 207 drivers were arrested when they were caught over the legal alcohol limit.
Eight of these arrests were in the Edenvale area.
Included in the number of road deaths were 21 pedestrians, among them two boys aged just seven and an eight-year-old girl.
Thirteen vehicle passengers were killed over the period.
According to the spokesperson for the EMPD, Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago, many of the incidents in which lives were lost could be attributed to drunk driving, excessive speeding, reckless and negligent driving and general bad attitude of drivers.

When compared to previous year, the number of road deaths over the festive season increased.
In 2015, 35 fatalities were recorded, while 36 deaths occurred in 2016.
Officers also issued 4 653 summonses for documentation, equipment on vehicles, defects and moving violations.
Eighteen drivers were arrested for excessive speeding.
Kgasago added that EMPD officers received 58 complaints relating to fireworks.
