Ron Smith thanks volunteers

“No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.”

To celebrate the role of volunteers Rand Aid’s Ron Smith Care Centre recently thanked its volunteers with a pizza party.

The dedicated volunteers give their time, talents and skills to enrich the lives of the elderly.

Because the November 30 event was about honouring the volunteer angels, the décor included colourful paper angels made by residents at the centre.

Each volunteer was given a handmade candle decorated with a beaded angel.

The gifts were given by Zühlsdorff from Rand Aid’s head office and Helen Petrie, manager of the complex.

Debbie Christen, manager of recreational programmes, thanked the volunteers for building relationships and for connecting with the residents.

“In the day-to-day care of older people, it is often easy to focus on giving them physical care and to neglect their psycho-social, emotional and spiritual care,” said Debbie.

Volunteers play an important role with the elderly.

A kind word, gentle touch, caring heart or a listening ear can mean so much to someone who is bored, lonely, sick, or living with dementia.

Debbie reminded the volunteers that, “no act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.”

The appreciation event was a huge success and served to unite the volunteers with a common purpose.

All of the volunteers expressed their delight, gratitude and appreciation for being recognised in such a special way.
