Mchunu wants to help youth get off the streets

DENVER – Most of the youngsters stand on corners and smoke drugs around this ward. I want to build sports facilities and to get the youngsters off the streets.

Denver resident and Ward 118 committee member Mlamuli Mchunu said he wants to see active youth members in Ward 118.

Mchunu is the committee member for economic development 2, which is sports and culture.

“Most of the youngsters stand on street corners and smoke drugs.

“I want to build sports facilities to get the youngsters off the streets. Once we have sports fields, we will host tournaments and fashion shows and bring the youth together,” said Mchunu.

Ward committee members were elected at the beginning of 2017, six months after the August 3 local government elections.

The purpose of ward committees is to encourage participation by the community.

The committee’s responsibility is to make the municipality aware of the needs and concerns of residents and to keep people informed about the activities of the municipality.

Mchunu said he is working on getting a place for the youth to practise arts.

“The biggest problem that I see in Ward 118 is unemployment and a high rate of teenage pregnancy.

“We have very few youngsters involved in sports. If we get them sports facilities, they will stay away from drugs and we will reduce the number of teenage pregnancies in our ward,” he said.
