Local rotarians donate generously to CHOC

A total of R17 000 was raised which Peter elected to donate to CHOC.

Rotarian Peter Makati and President Alan Rock from the Rotary Club of Bedfordview donated funds to the CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation SA recently.

Linda Moore, regional manager for the foundation, accepted the donation.

Peter also gave a presentation of his summit of Kilimanjaro with his son Lufuno Makhari.

This was a dream come true for him.

Members of the Rotary Club of Bedfordview sponsored the climb starting from one cent per meter. A total of R17 000 was raised which Peter elected to donate to CHOC.

The donation was presented to Linda at a dinner held at the Belgravia Bowling Club.

The foundation was established in 1979 as a support group to parents of children with cancer, by parents of children with cancer.

Having experienced the immense emotional and financial toll that cancer takes, the organisation recognised there is more than one victim in the family of the child with cancer. CHOC’s aim was to ease the burden on parents facing the same journey by providing access to relevant, accurate information, as well as emotional and practical support.

Linda said CHOC provides comprehensive countrywide support for children with cancer and other life-threatening blood disorders, and their families.

“Our range of comprehensive support to affected families include parent to parent support, counselling by a CHOC social worker and practical support such as accommodation in CHOC houses nationwide, transport, food parcels and recreational activities.

“In addition, the organisation creates awareness, particularly about the early detection of cancer in children, supports health professionals and upgrades treatment facilities into child-friendly environments and advocates for those whose lives have been affected by this disease,” said Linda.

CHOC relies on donations from caring corporates, individuals and parents of children with cancer.

Funds raised are used to provide all-encompassing support and direct practical help for the children and their families and those involved in the treatment.
