Local fans join Liverpool Foodbank drive

A record 728.6kg of food was collected before the recent Huddersfield Town fixture at Anfield.

Local fans of Liverpool Football Club have pledged their support to ending hunger.

This follows on from the dedication of Liverpool FC in efforts to tackle food poverty in the UK.

The club is a major supporter of the Fans Supporting Foodbanks initiative, and hosts Foodbank collections at all home games.

A record 728.6kg of food was collected before the recent Huddersfield Town fixture.

The donation, which is the biggest Foodbank collection to date, is the equivalent of 64 three-day food parcels providing over 2 000 meals to help feed approximately 250 people in crisis.

Now, the Liverpool Supporters Club Gauteng, as part of its local social responsibility programme, has joined hands with Ridgeway Racebar and Food Forward SA to run its own Foodbank.

Patrons of Ridgeway Racebar and local Liverpool fans can support the scheme by donating non-perishable foodstuffs.

Donations can be dropped in the red wheelie bins at Ridgeway Racebar during the week, and in the Anfield South supporters area at Ridgeway Racebar when fans gather to watch Liverpool play.

All food collected will be donated to and distributed by Food Forward SA.

The initiative will run until December 10.

Food items suitable for donating include rice, maize meal, cereal, samp, pasta, dried beans, lentils, tinned fish, soya mince and milk powder.

Jams, peanut butter, canned mix vegetables, cooking oil, salt and sugar are also needed.
