She was born in England and emigrated with her family in 1982 when she was eight years old.

“I grew up in Benoni and went to St Dominic’s High School for Girls in Boksburg.”

Denise has a degree in psychology and communication, as well as an honours degree in marketing communications.

“As manager of Arbor Village, I am responsible for the well-being of all our residents and have to ensure that the staff continue to grow and develop so they are able to offer our residents an even better quality of service. I believe in a strong team where everyone has input to better serve our residents,” said Denise.

Before joining Methodist Homes, she worked in the marketing communications and investor relations department of a JSE-listed IT company in Midrand.

This mother of two said running after her children also keeps her busy and is an important aspect of her time.

“I have been married for 20 years and James (14) and Taylor (12) keep me very busy when I am not at work. It’s very important to me to get the right balance between work and family life,” she said.

She said that after working for a large corporate she realised she was more suited to giving back to a community and loves the satisfaction of making a difference in people’s lives.

“I was at Methodist Homes’ Eddy House for over nine years and although it was a well run home with a good team, I wanted a new challenge. When the Arbor position became available, I felt the time was perfect to take on more responsibility and add my experience to a new team,” said Denise.

She said one aspect she loves about her job is the daily interaction with people and how one small gesture makes a big difference in someone’s life.

“I love having that special cup of tea with someone and listening to his or her life stories or a problem that he or she is grappling with,” she said.

She said running a village and care centre does come with some challenges as she cannot please everybody at the same time.

“You need to manage their expectations. I want Arbor Village to be a vibrant, meaningful home. It must provide a platform within our community so all care partners (families, residents and staff) can actively grow and give, as well as receive, person-centred care. I want to work with my team to achieve this. I want it to be regarded as the standard in care facilities in the area,” said Denise.
