Damaged infrastructure remains a concern for Ward 92 residents following floods

"I have flood damage across my ward which I am still trying to get repaired."

Community members have raised concerns regarding damaged infrastructure dating back to the November 9, 2016 floods.

Pavements along Station Road and Swartkops Crescent have been left eroded and stormwater infrastructure damaged.

Ward 92 Clr Tiziana Plaskitt said she has already begun addressing the matter.

“I have had many meetings with the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) to address the damage caused by the floods,” Plaskitt said. “The damage caused by the floods was not only in one area or one suburb. We had flood damage across the ward which I am still trying to get addressed.”

Following the recent rains on October 9, Plaskitt said she and an EMM customer care area manager have met to assess the state of the damaged infrastructure.

She hopes this will speed up the repairs process.

“The upgrading of the stormwater pipe at the corner of Flemming and Brickfield roads in Meadowdale has begun,” she said.

Plaskitt believes the installation of improved stormwater infrastructure in Meadowdale, which is located higher than Edenvale, will reduce flooding in areas such as Highway Gardens, Eastleigh and Buurendaal.

EMM recently announced that the process to remediate the Eastleigh Spruit has begun.

Metro spokesperson Themba Gadebe said the municipality will clear the spruit of obstructions which contribute to flooding.

By rehabilitating and maintaining the spruit, EMM hopes to reduce the incidence of flooding.

Since last year’s floods, the community of Edenvale has seen little work done to address this issue.

Over the past year the NEWS has regularly reported on these concerns, as well as on the Johannesburg High Court ruling in favour of three businesses, Fluid Power, Propshaft Master and Wieland SA.

As part of this ruling, the court ordered EMM to repair Eastleigh Spruit.

Plaskitt encouraged community members to report all their concerns to the municipality.

“It gives me a stronger voice when residents report matters the correct way and I follow up on them,” she said.

A request for comment was sent to EMM on October 25. No comment has been received.
