Public can raise new objections to Linksfield Mixed Use Development

The application will be open for inspection from 8am to 3.30pm daily until November 29.

The re-advertisement of the proposed changes to the Linksfield Mixed Use Development were published last week.

Activists believe that some 6 000 graves are situated on the property, including those of people who died from infectious diseases such as bubonic plague, anthrax and leprosy.

This follows a decision by the City of Joburg’s Municipal Planning Tribunal to put the development on hold.

The tribunal hearing, which was held on October 4, ruled that there were “significant changes in the original township application”.

Ward 19 Clr Bill Rundle said these changes had not been brought to the attention of the public.

Residents now have 28 days to raise new objections to the development.

Some of the changes to the original development include the addition of a petrol station and a reduction in the number of residential units from 8 000 to 5 000.

Since 2011, residents have repeatedly raised concerns over the proposed development on the land around Sizwe Tropical Disease Hospital.

Activists allege that some 6 000 graves are situated on the property, including those of people who died from infectious diseases such as bubonic plague, anthrax and leprosy.

In addition, they argue, the land around the hospital is home to a wide variety of wildlife and indigenous grasses.

The application will be open for inspection from 8am to 3.30pm daily until November 29 at the City of Joburg’s registration counter for the Department of Development Planning.
