Malvern Clinic creates awareness of cancer

JOBURG – He urged men to go for regular [prostate cancer] check-ups and mammograms in order for the cancer to be detected early.

Malvern Clinic held a cancer awareness day at the clinic on October 27.

The purpose of the campaign was to raise awareness about the importance of early cancer detection and healthy lifestyles to prevent cancer.

Mike Spadino, chairperson of Malvern Clinic committee and organiser of the event said the awareness campaign was part of Cancer Awareness Month.

“The campaign is an annual event to make people aware of the dangers of cancer.

“We are educating our residents about their health by handing out pamphlets,” he said.

The pamphlets contained information on prostate, cervical, testicular and breast cancer as well as Ebola and other diseases.

Spadino said if residents are diagnosed with cancer, the Malvern Clinic will offer them counselling, support and refer them to hospital for treatment.

Nosipho Madinane from Cansa said it is important to educate people about cancer.

“Some people don’t have knowledge about cancer. We are here to educate them and encourage them to get tested,” she said.

Cancer survivor Bongani Radebe encouraged patients to remain positive in their journey because cancer can be beaten.

He urged others to go for regular check-ups and mammograms to ensure early detection.

“If you are diagnosed with cancer it does not mean it is the end of the world. You need to follow a healthy diet and always go for check-ups,” he said.

Cervical cancer screenings, breast examinations and prostate cancer screenings as well as HIV/Aids tests were offered on the day.
