Crime rises in Cleveland precinct

A decrease in crime was reported for common robbery, rape, arson and business burglary.

The national SAPS crime stats for the period of April 2016 to March 2017 in the Cleveland precinct showed a 27.6 per cent increase in the number of reported murders.

There was also a 200 per cent increase in contact sexual offences, a 22.9 per cent increase in attempted murder and a 25.5 per cent increase in theft of motor vehicles.

Among the other crimes which showed an increase were common assault, car and truck hijacking, residential and business robberies, malicious damage to property and shoplifting.

A decrease in crime was reported for common robbery, rape, arson and business burglary.

Forty-three arrests were made for the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition and 110 arrests were made for drug-related crimes.

A further 166 arrests were made for driving while under the influence of alcohol.
