Sebenza SAPS communications officer Sharon Tsotsotso urged residents to be vigilant in order to avoid robbery and hijacking after being followed home from the mall.

Tsotsotso said even though they have not received any reports at the station this year, there were incidents reported last year.

Tsotsotso issued the following tips to avoid being followed home:

• Avoid withdrawing and carrying large sums of money at the mall and also make use of internet transfers instead of depositing money at the bank.

• Plan your day and notify someone of your whereabouts and when you expect to be back.

• Do not wear expensive jewellery while out at the mall as that makes you an easy target.

• Pay attention to the cars behind you.

• If you notice that you are being followed, drive to the nearest police station and do not drive home.

• Don’t post your movements on social media.

• If you are visiting someone at their home, avoid parking outside or waiting in the car as this creates opportunities for hijackers.

• If your car breaks down, don’t accept help from strangers. Rather call a security or insurance company.

If you find yourself in a hijacking situation, Tsotsotso suggested residents do the following:

• Try not to lose your temper because criminals might panic and harm you.

• Do not make any sudden movements.

• Comply to their requests and do as they say.
