UPDATE: No time frame given for reopening of R24 and R21 highways
"Uber and metered taxi drivers parked their vehicles in the middle of the freeway and abandoned them".
It is currently unclear when the R24 and R21 highways will re-open.
Motorists have been warned to avoid the two major routes near OR Tambo International Airport as protests are underway.
Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department’s Kobedi Mokheseng urged motorists to avoid the area.
He also said Uber and metered taxi drivers parked their vehicles in the middle of the freeway and abandoned them.

It is believed that the intention of the protest is to block access to OR Tambo International Airport.
Reports have also been received that truck drivers are lying on the highway.
Tow truck services have been deployed to the affected highways to remove abandoned cars barricading the roads.
