Teamwork results in arrest of mother and son

"Although the charges are theft at the moment, the court might change it to fraud at a later stage.”

A mother and son were arrested on October 10 on charges of theft.

The SAPS believes the charges will be altered to fraud charges.

They were arrested at the Karaglen Shopping Centre by police officers and taken to the Bedfordview Police Station.

Captain Andre de Jager, spokesperson of the Bedfordview SAPS, confirmed the arrests.

He said the mother and son were arrested on charges of theft and detained at Germiston Police Station.

“The two suspects first appeared in court on October 12. Although the charges are theft at the moment, the court might change it to fraud at a later stage,” said de Jager.

He said they did not apply for bail during the first court appearance and the case was postponed to October 19 to allow for further investigation.

“As there was a warrant out for their arrest, both will remain in police custody,” said de Jager.

IRS Forensic Investigators, an independent financial crimes investigation company, assisted the SAPS in making the arrests.

Chad Thomas, chief forensic investigator at IRS Forensic Investigations, said the two allegedly defrauded a company in Bedfordview.

Thomas said IRS turned to the SAPS Asset Forfeiture Unit for assistance with investigations which resulted in the arrests.
