In September South Africa celebrated the country’s rich diversity in art, history, customs, traditions, language and food.

Weeks before the heritage celebrations at Ron Smith Care Centre, residents made headbands designed with their names and countries of the origin.

Although the majority of residents are South Africans, the celebrations also boasted representation from Italy, Portugal, Germany, Holland, Lithuania, Latvia, Indonesia, England, Scotland, Ireland, Canada, Israel, Namibia and Zambia.

The day had a universal feel with colourful international flags, previously made in the OT Activity Centre, used as centerpieces for the tables.

The community at Ron Smith Care Centre gathered outdoors on September 22 to celebrate the richness and diversity of cultures represented at the care centre.

Residents and visitors were treated to a cultural dance spectacle performed by various staff members who were all attired in their respective traditional outfits.

The dance programme took the audience around the world and included a Sepedi dance, Step; several Middle Eastern belly dances; the folk dance from Italy, Tarentella; traditional cultural dances by the Shangaan, Tshonga, Venda (Xibelani), Zulu and Xhosa groups; a Spanish line dance, Ah Si; and an Israeli folk dance, Nigun Atik.

Staff then scattered into the audience to dance with the seated residents to a beautiful Viennese waltz.

The cultural dance show was followed by a traditional South African braai.
