WATCH: Edenglen High names grandstand after former learner and Olympian, Simbine

Simbine competed in the 2016 Olympics against Usain Bolt.

South African Olympic runner Akani Simbine recently visited his past high school, Edenglen High.

Akani Simbine, South African Olympian admiring the plaque which will be placed on one of Edenglen High’s grand stands in honour of him.

The school invited Simbine to unveil the naming of a grandstand after him.

Gerhard Dempsey, EGHS head of sports, said the school was extremely proud of Simbine’s achievements.

He said from an early age he showed a determination to succeed.

While a learner at Edenglen, Simbine received his full colours in athletics for 2009, 2010 and 2011.

“At the school, we realised Simbine had talent very early on,” said Dempsey.

Since school Simbine has obtained his Bachelor of Information Technology, competed in the 2016 Olympics, against Usain Bolt and participated in the 2017 world athletic champs.

Simbine said he was honoured by the school and encouraged the learners to do their best in everything.
