Latest: Many left homeless as fire destroyes shacks

A fire at about 2am on Sunday at Jumpas Informal Settlement destroyed several shacks.

The cause of the fire is unknown.

Joburg EMS spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi said no injuries were reported. “Disaster management will be assisting the affected households with blankets and food parcels. We are already busy with the rebuilding of the shacks.

“We urge residents to be cautious when using heating and lighting appliances like paraffin stoves and candles. Residents must not to leave these unattended,” said Mulaudzi.
