Terrace Road camera is not faulty – Kgasago

"It was found that the camera is in a 100 % working condition,"

In the last few weeks community members have raised a number of concerns regarding the Terrace Road speed camera.

The NEWS spoke to a number of community members who were willing to share their concerns.

Community members believe the camera at the intersection of Terrace and Fountain roads is faulty because it often flashes irregularly.

Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago, spokesperson of the EMPD, said the EMPD has received complaints about the camera via the office of the local councillor.

He said the notion that the camera is faulty was “pure speculation caused by the public’s rumour-mongering which is intensified on social media platforms.”

He claims that each and every complaint in this regard had been attended to and was investigated.

He explained that the camera flashes during the day due to regular tests which are conducted remotely on a daily basis.

The tests are done to analyses the quality of the photos.

“It will also flash each time an offender is caught exceeding the speed limit,” said Kgasago.

He explained EMPD was not aware of any faulty fines having been sent out to the public.

The camera is stringently calibrated every six months.

“Each and every image taken goes through a ‘back office procedure‘ whereby the image is downloaded, verified and adjudicated. There are numerous measures in place to ensure that each and every fine is accurate,” said Kgasago who went on to say that the only time the camera would become faulty is if there was a malfunction due to an unknown factor or the camera was vandalised.
