21 suspects arrested during SAPS and JMPD joint operation

Police arrested 21 suspects during a joint operation between the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) and Sebenza SAPS.

Sebenza SAPS spokesperson, Sgt Sharon Tsotsotso said the roadblock was conducted on August 18 to address driving under the influence of alcohol Long Meadow.

“Just after 10pm, Sgt Carnatius Berresh and Cst Cecil Phakula stopped a green Nissan towing truck. They asked the driver to produce his drivers license and also asked to search his vehicle. There were three people in the truck between the ages of 34 and 41,” said Tsotsotso.

Berresh searched the driver and found a firearm with serial numbers but he did not have the license for the firearm.

Tsotsotso said one of the suspects refused to be searched and started fighting with the police.

“The other police members came to help Berresh and found a SAPS Barretta firearm with the serial number removed.

Phakula searched the third suspect and found two live rounds of ammunition in his pockets,” said Tsotsotso.

The suspects were arrested on the scene and no injuries were sustained during the fight. The suspects were charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm, resisting arrest and possession of live rounds of ammunition.

During the operation, JMPD arrested 18 drivers for driving under the influence of alcohol.
