Writers 2000 prize giving ceremony

The members of Writers 2000 (W2000) gathered at the Inyoni Creek Clubhouse on Saturday, July 29 for their annual prize giving.

The members of Writers 2000 (W2000) gathered at the Inyoni Creek Clubhouse on July 29 for their annual prize giving ceremony.

This is an event which combines anticipation with recognition and a happy dose of fun as members acknowledge the achievements of their peers.

Part of the festivities included announcing the winners of the prestigious annual writing competition.

Four external judges, fiction (Prof David Medalie), non-fiction (Hagen Engler), poetry (Marcia Leveson) and backpager (Marion Scher) were on hand to share their judging experiences with the members.

They are all recognised authors, journalists and academics. Marion Scher is the Patron of W2000.

The winners are:

• Fiction – Jill Jacques

• Non-fiction – Carol Anne Nelson

• Poetry – Lorna Senior

• Backpager – Geraldine Wilkins.

But the awards did not stop there. Every year W2000 gives recognition to members who have excelled or made a valuable contribution to the club.

This year’s recipients are:

The Carpenter trophy is presented to a member who has had external success and has had their work published.The trophy was awarded to Burgie Ireland.

The Pen trophy is presented to a member whose writing has shown marked improvement and who features as a regular winner in the monthly competitions. The trophy was awarded to Michael Cordes.

The Judy Bees award is presented to a promising writer. Michelle Sachs received it.

The Marion Scher Plate is presented to a member who has taken the group in a new direction and/or given exceptional service and it was given to Antoinette Reis.

The Chairman’s trophy is awarded by the chairperson to a member who has given excellent service and effort to the group and it was awarded to Jan Venter.

Editor’s award is awarded by the editor of the Write Stuff (W2000 newsletter) for continuing support or the emergence of a new voice. Meggan Preuss received it.

The Ford award is awarded by Jacki Ford to an Unsung Hero and Tessa Whelan received that award.
