Greenstone resident, Palesa Phiri, is a finalist in the Mrs Commonwealth South Africa 2017 pageant.

Palesa is a mother of four, a wife and a businesswoman who runs an events company with her husband.

She said she decided to enter this year’s competition after seeing posts about it on social media.

“I met the Mrs Commonwealth finalist last year at my events venue when they were looking for a place to host one of their events. At the time I didn’t think much of it. This year I saw some posts on social media and that is when this competition grabbed my attention and I became interested,” said Palesa.

She said she decided to enter the competition because it is about charity and bringing wealth to communities.

“Mrs Commonwealth is not just a beauty pageant – it is about charity and giving back. I love that. This competition has given me a new purpose in life because it’s no longer just about me, my family and my business. I love helping people and raising funds for the charities we work with,” said Palesa.

The grand finale will take place at The Lyric Theatre on October 20.

The newly-crowned winner will represent South Africa at various International pageants in 2018.

This is an annual competition and each year, winners are expected to use their titles to help communities in need. Every year Commonwealth South Africa Pageants are in search of contestants for Mrs Commonwealth SA.

The title holders will have the opportunity to compete at Mrs Commonwealth International in London every year. The winners are expected to use their titles to help communities in need.

The pageant supports Pink Drive, an initiative to create awareness and fight breast cancer.

“I believe that it is everyone’s duty to do what he or she can to create awareness about this disease. Cancer is something that is very close to my heart because I have lost loved ones because of it. The Pink Drive initiative speaks to so many people,” said Palesa.

The pageant focuses on charity and empowers South African women to become change agents in their communities which in turn, brings about sustainable development in the country.

Palesa said this pageant has also helped her to focus more on helping other people. “I want to make a difference in my community and play my part wherever I can because I believe that our country can achieve a lot if everybody just plays their part. I want to help the youth, elderly and the homeless in order to better their lives,” she said.
