Using music to inspire

KENSINGTON: Skonz on her way to success.

By Busi Vilakazi

Kwa-Zulu Natal born artist Sibongakonke ‘Skonz’ Makhathini is a young artist destined for big things.

“Coming from a small town in KZN, I never knew how much opportunities there are in the music industry. Moving to Joburg exposed me to the entertainment industry and that is where I wanted to grow and succeed,” said Skonz.

She attended an art school, COPA based in Kensington, and said that is where she was able to enhance her skills and really started to bloom as an artist.

“Attending art school helped me grow as a musician and also exposed me to different sides of the entertainment industry.”

Skonz is a member of Sound of Jozi Development Hub and said this is where she has seen her growth as an artist because she has had the opportunity of working with the best in the industry.

“My whole spectrum of singing and professionalism improved immensely and from that growth, further avenues have opened up,” she said.

She has worked with the likes of Deborah Fraser and Themba Mkhize and said being exposed to such artists adds to her development.

She uses her talent to empower others as she is part of an initiative by Magelela MultiMedia called Slaying Queens.

“I’m very excited about the women’s initiative because it’s aimed at women. We need to empower each other and since it’s Women’s Month we want to empower women in the entertainment industry,” said Skonz.

To her, Women’s Month is about gratitude.

“Women’s Month is about the gratitude given to the women that marched and made a difference. They have encouraged women to empower themselves and each other. Women’s Month allows me to pride myself in being a woman and it’s a re-emphasis of the strength that a woman possesses.

“It is not just about having celebrations but truly understanding the strength and dignity that comes with being a woman.”
