Two Sebenza businessmen, Hennie Vermaak and Derek Meano, told the NEWS that they have received speeding fines although they claim not to have been speeding.

In the speeding fines shown to the NEWS, the vehicles can be seen stationary at a red traffic light with other cars around them.

Vermaak said he is sure he can see his brake lights on in the photograph attached to the fine.

“We know there are speed cameras there, so we know not to speed,” said Meano

Meano added that he has also seen the camera flashing although there were no cars travelling through the intersection.

“All we want to do is determine the legitimacy of the camera and how often it is collaborated ,” said Vermaak.

Most of the fines issued are between the speed of 71km/h and 74km/h.

Meano said in the last month 10 fines have been issued to the company.

He explained that all the staff at his business knows not to speed as they have to pay the fines from their own pockets.

The pair said a few fines came at first then more came and this raised the pair’s suspicions

Meano and Vermaak both said if it can be proven that the vehicles were speeding, they would happily pay the fines.

Vermaak said he does hope to query some of the fines.

However, he elaborated and said getting the fines “knocked down” will not solve the problem in the long term.

Besides the concerns of Vermaak and Meano, the NEWS has heard of concerns from numerous community members regarding the camera operating obscurely.

A request for comment was sent to the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department on August 8 and again on August 10 requesting comment by August 11 at 9am.
