Nabbed: Businessman not fooled by con artist

The vigilance of an alert shop owner paid off and resulted in the arrest of a woman for fraud in Sector Two.

The arrest, which was made by Edenvale SAPS, occurred after the woman tried to use fraudulent charity documentation to collect donations from an Edenvale business.

Captain Jean Olckers, spokesperson of the Edenvale SAPS, said the businessman noticed the documents looked suspicious and contacted the charity directly.

“The charity confirmed the documents were false,” said Olckers.

Shortly after contacting the charity, the businessman phoned the police and officers made the arrest on July 27.

Olckers said the woman, in her 30s, will appear in court soon on a charge of fraud.

“We urge residents and shopping centres to confirm the legitimacy of charity collectors before handing over donations or allowing them to collect donations at shops,” said Olckers.
