The march was led by community leaders from Denver, Jumpas informal settlement and Malvern.

Community members questioned how SMMEs and labourers were appointed.

The community demanded the following from Department of Public Works:

  •  That 30 per cent of the total R38-m project must be ploughed back into the community of ward 118.
  •  The contract of the community liaison officer must be terminated and the process must be restarted.
  •  To view the qualifications of the current community liaison officer, the interview scores and minutes of the panel that appointed the officer.
  •  Advertise all sub-contractors and job opportunities so that all community members can get a chance to apply.
  •  To provide equal opportunities to all sub-contractors and avoid appointing only certain contractors.
  •  Restart the recruitment process.

The memorandum was received and signed by William Moeketsi, expanded public works programme manager from the Department of Public Works.

The department was granted seven working days to respond to the memorandum.

The EXPRESS has since requested comment from Moeketsi.

“I am not at liberty to comment on the allegations as we still need to sit down with my team,” said Moeketsi.
