Teacher Jenna Eagar, who has been running the project, said that as a school they always try to give back to the less fortunate.

“We try to encourage our learners to do community service. We are a small school but we always try to give to the less fortunate,” said Eagar.

She said as part of Mandela Day they chose the home because of the work they do in the community.

Sandi van Tonder, chairperson of the Cansa Keurboom liasion committee said the school has been donating to the home for the past eight years.

“The school has been a blessing to the home as they are always willing to help us. Even when we do our Shavathon, the Grade 11 learners are always willing to help us. They are very involved with the home,” explained Van Tonder.

Eager said that as a school it was important to teach learners humanity.

“Getting the learners involved teaches them the spirit of Ubuntu.”

She said the learners have benefited from being involved in the project because they have learnt to be kind, appreciative and how to share sympathy.

“Thank you for always being there for the home and all the donations. We really appreciate it,” said van Tonder.

The school received a certificate of appreciation from Cansa Keurboom Care Home.
