#MandelaDay: NEWS overwhelmed by support for soup kitchen project
The word Khanyisa means spreading the light, which is what the organisation hopes to do for those in need.
Once again the NEWS‘ calls for support of others were met by an immense response from the Bedfordview and Edenvale communities.

Despite already giving overwhelming support in response to our calls for support of those affected by the Knysna fires, our communities continued to give as far as possible by donating non-perishable foodstuff, blankets, scarves, beanies, socks and even blankets towards our Mandela Day Soup Kitchen Incentive Project in aid of Khanyisa Soup Kitchen in Edenvale.
We thank you, our readers, for heeding our call to support others.

Businesses in Bedfordview and Edenvale also came on board as Karaglen SuperSpar, Pick n Pay Eden Meadows, Pick n Pay Edenglen and Glenvale Hyper hosted shopping trolleys in their stores for shoppers to drop off donated goods.
Khanyisa Soup Kitchen took its first delivery of freshly baked bread courtesy of Colcacchio Eastgate at the beginning of June already.
The delivery, which the restaurant has undertaken to continue on a weekly basis, also forms part of the Bedfordview and Edenvale NEWS’ Khanyisa Trust Soup Kitchen Incentive Project for Mandela Day.
Leigh Evans, the secretary of the organisation, has previously explained to the NEWS that the word Khanyisa means spreading the light, which is what the organisation hopes to do for those in need.
Khanyisa provides meals to approximately 120 people a day, five days a week.
It is estimated that approximately 70 per cent of the people visiting the kitchen on a daily basis are homeless, with approximately 30 per cent being unemployed.
Meals are served weekdays from 10am to 11am.
On Fridays, the kitchen prepares extra meals as take-aways for the weekend.
Khanyisa aims to ensure that the nutritional content of meals meets most of the daily nutritional requirements for an adult.
For many families in Edenvale, Khanyisa’s daily meal is the only meal they will receive each day and the number of people who make use of the soup kitchen continues to increase.
