Illegal activities and bylaw infringements addressed in Ward 66 by Metro police officer and ward councillor

BEZ VALLEY– Addressing bylaws issues.

Ward 66 councillor Carlos Da Rocha, together with Sergeant Collen Mahlatsi of Metro police, did a routine visit around the ward and addressed several bylaw contraventions.

Da Rocha said he noticed a few bylaw infringements in the ward. “The aim of the routine visits in these spots is to highlight the repeat offenders in these wards and also remind residents to respect bylaws. Some of the complaints were noise pollution, dumping on the side of the road, prostitution next to a school, illegal recycling and illegal dwelling,” said Da Rocha.

He said residents need to respect bylaws because they are there for a reason. “I’m concerned about the prostitution happening in De La Rey because there is a primary [school in that area]. We cannot allow our children to be exposed to such situations.” Mahlatsi said addressing issues before they get out of hand is important.

Sergeant Collen Mahlatsi from Metro police and Ward 66 councillor Carlos Da Rocha talk to vagrants.

“Recycling in a residential area is not allowed. If you want to recycle you must do it in an industrial area because of health issues and because now, residents will complain about rats caused by the rubbish,” said Mahlatsi.

Da Rocha said the routine visit has made a difference in the ward. “Metro police working with councillors has an impact because we know the areas and working together to address issues helps. We need to address these issues before they get out of hand,” Da Rocha explained.

There was also illegal trading on pavements which Da Rocha said needed to be addressed. In addition, a resident was ordered to clean up dumping outside her residence in Bez Valley.
