Cat heaven for rescued felines

“We re-homed over 300 animals last year, and 164 so far this year."

Edenvale’s Cat Shack is not only a place of safety for cats but also a boarding cattery.

The initiative, which was founded by Brenda Höfer in 2008, is now home to a variety of animals including cats, rabbits, puppies and even a young goose.

Caswell Mbuqe, Brenda Höfer’s right-hand man at the Cat Shack, loving Jade, a rescued Siamese cat and the well known ‘Cat Shack Cat’.

Brenda was inspired to create the Cat Shack by her love for animals.

“It all started when I rescued five cats that were a couple of hours old from a local park,” explained Brenda.

Only one kitten survived.

But Brenda never looked back and instead provided a sanctuary for neglected animals which needed to be boarded.

She believes all animals deserve a home.

The Cat Shack is a safe, stress-free and friendly environment for both animals and human visitors.

At the Cat Shack Brenda and her right-hand man, Caswell Mbuqe, rehabilitate abandoned and neglected cats.

“We re-homed over 300 animals last year, and 164 so far this year,” said Brenda.

Brenda often hosts community members and schoolchildren who are doing community service.

She believes that it is everyone’s responsibility to take care of animals.

Brenda said there is a need for animal care education and awareness in the community.

Although Brenda runs her facility as a part-time hobby, she feels it does help take away pressure from organisations such as the SPCA.
