Enough is enough

MALVERN – The local community united and marched against abuse on Youth Day.

Inner City Zone 12 commemorated Youth Day by marching against the killing of women and children.

The march started at the Bertha Solomon Recreation Centre and ended at Malvern Primary School. The community came out in numbers to support the march. Children in school uniforms sang songs and held placards with messages speaking out against women and children abuse.

The march was led by Defence Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula. During her address she pleaded with parents, especially mothers, to look after their daughters. “As a mother, never allow your child to be abused by your partner just because he is the breadwinner. Protect your child and go out and seek help if you are being abused,” said Mapisa-Nqakula.

She urged the community to break their silence and speak out. “If you are suspicious about a certain individual or you suspect a child is being abused, get together as a community and try to help.”

Mapisa-Nqakula said she was happy that faith leaders joined the march because they are the support system of the community. Prayers were said in different spots during the march.

Ward 65 Councillor Lindani Zulu said, “We are happy to see the community standing together and saying ‘enough is enough’. Most importantly we are happy to see churches unite, as they are the backbone of the community.”
